Smart metering and smart grid solutions for utilities

The utility & metering business of Ambimat Electronics — reading meters remotely and bringing field data into operations.

ambipower.ambimat.com  ·  Ahmedabad, India
The opportunity

Powering the next stage of utility transformation

Utilities are moving from periodic, manual data collection toward connected operations — and most need a route that starts from the infrastructure they already run.

Reading is slow and manual

Reading meters by hand is costly and error-prone, and it limits how often a utility actually sees its data.

The field is hard to see

Distribution networks are harder to run without visibility into what is happening on feeders and at substations.

Replacement isn't realistic

Most utilities need to modernise on top of their existing meter estate rather than replace everything on day one.

About · Ambimat Group

The utility & metering business of Ambimat Electronics

Established in April 1982, Ambimat has 44 years of experience. AmbiPower is its utility and metering business, serving power, water and gas distribution utilities from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.

Our mission

To help utilities minimise losses and improve quality of service with practical metering and smart-grid solutions.

Our approach

We focus on solutions that build on the infrastructure a utility already has — reading existing meters, and bringing field data into operations — rather than requiring a wholesale replacement to get started.

Understanding the utility environment

Two problems we help utilities solve

Metering

Getting readings out of meters

Reading meters by hand is slow, costly and prone to error, and it limits how often a utility sees its data. Automated and mobile reading collect data without a manual visit — and can be added without replacing the meter.

Retrofit Module

A cellular automatic meter reader that reads a utility meter — water, gas or energy — and forwards readings to the utility's Head End System over a mobile network, so meters can be read remotely without a field visit.

What it does
  • Reads water, gas or energy meters in the field
  • On-device processing to reduce data sent over the network
  • Scheduled, on-demand and long-window meter reads
  • Event-based SMS notifications
Where it fits

Sits at the meter, reads it locally and communicates with the utility's Head End System over cellular — fitting an existing metering estate without replacing the meter.

UDR App

A mobile app that reads meters through the optical port and sends readings to the utility's billing servers. It stores readings on the device and uploads them later, so a constant data connection is not required at the meter.

What it does
  • Reads meters over the optical port from a standard mobile device
  • Works with single-phase and three-phase meters
  • Stores readings on the device, uploads when connected
  • Replaces paper-based meter reading
Where it fits

Runs on a standard mobile device carried by a meter reader, delivering data to the utility's billing system — replacing manual transcription of readings.

Typical use
Walk-route reading Intermittent coverage Removing transcription errors

Available on Google Play.

DESU — Data Extraction & Storage Unit

A gateway that collects data from field devices over a range of communication buses and forwards it to a SCADA server over a LAN or cellular connection — the layer between on-field equipment and the utility's software platform.

What it does
  • Collects data from field devices over multiple communication buses
  • On-board buffering so data is not lost during outages
  • Forwards data to a SCADA platform over LAN or cellular
Where it fits

Sits between field devices and the SCADA platform, gathering data on site and delivering it upstream so field data reaches operations systems reliably.

Typical use
Concentrating substation & feeder data Bridging field equipment to a central platform Store-and-forward on intermittent links

Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)

A modular, scalable controller that connects digital and analog field devices back to the SCADA system and forwards their data to the SCADA backend over a LAN or cellular connection.

What it does
  • Interfaces with digital and analog field devices
  • Modular, scalable input / output
  • Backhaul to SCADA over LAN or cellular
Where it fits

Installed in the field or at a substation, it interfaces with local devices and relays their status and measurements to the control room's SCADA system.

Typical use
Monitoring feeders & substations Telemetry backhaul to a control room Extending SCADA to distributed sites

RST Reset Unit

Monitors the environment of an IT-rack and RTU and lets the power be reset remotely over SMS or LAN, with temperature monitoring and SMS / e-mail alerts. (“RST” refers to the Reset Unit.)

What it does
  • Ambient temperature monitoring of the IT-rack
  • Remote power reset over SMS and LAN
  • SMS and e-mail alerting with a reset audit trail
Where it fits

Installed with the IT-rack or RTU it watches. It reports temperature and status, raises alerts, and lets an operator restart equipment remotely rather than travelling to site.

Typical use
Recovering an unresponsive RTU remotely Watching rack temperature at unstaffed sites Alerting operations to power / temperature events

Solution · Advanced Meter Reading

Move from periodic collection toward connected operations

01 · Manual reading
Walk route · transcription
02 · Automated reading (AMR)
Retrofit Module · UDR App
03 · Two-way metering (AMI)
Extend coverage over time

Reading meters by hand is slow, costly and error-prone. AMR collects readings without a manual visit; AMI adds two-way communication. AmbiPower supports reading in two complementary ways — cellular at the meter, or over the optical port from a mobile device.

Outcomes
  • Automated or mobile reading instead of manual transcription
  • A digital path from meter to billing
  • A staged route that builds on the existing meter estate
These are products and system components that support the path toward AMI. They are not, on their own, a complete AMI platform.

Solution · Smart Grid

Bring the field into the control room

Instrumenting the network — so field equipment can report status and measurements back to operations — is the basis for a smarter grid. AmbiPower provides field devices that bring data back to the control room over LAN or cellular.

Outcomes
  • More visibility of field equipment in the control room
  • A path to bring distributed sites into SCADA
  • Fewer site visits to recover monitoring equipment
These are field devices and system components. Broader outcomes such as loss reduction or predictive operation depend on the wider system a utility builds around them.

Choosing how meters connect

There is no single right answer — cellular and RF mesh both work, and many utilities use a mix. Match the technology to the area, then confirm with a survey before rolling out.

Cellular

Each meter connects on its own over existing mobile networks — suits meters that are spread out. Low-power options (NB-IoT, LTE-M) trade throughput for reach and low power, a good fit for small, infrequent messages.

AmbiPower's Retrofit Module uses a cellular link at the meter.
RF mesh

Meters relay data for one another toward a data concentrator, which shares a smaller number of upstream connections — suits dense areas where meters are close together and can relay for each other.

Coverage and performance depend on the local environment.
Weigh: meter density Mobile coverage Data per meter Per-device & ongoing cost
