What are smart metering products?

Smart metering products let a utility read its meters remotely and bring that data into billing and operations, instead of sending staff to read each meter by hand. AmbiPower’s range covers two needs: field & communication hardware that reads meters and carries their data back from the field over cellular or LAN, and software apps for mobile meter reading and field work. Most products build on the meters a utility already has, so automated or mobile reading can often be added without a full meter replacement.

What products does AmbiPower offer for utilities?
AmbiPower offers 5 products in two groups. Field & communication hardware: AmbiPower Retrofit Module, DESU — Data Extraction & Storage Unit, Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), RST Reset Unit. Software & apps: AmbiPower UDR App. Together they let a utility read meters remotely and carry field data back into operations.
What is the difference between AmbiPower’s metering hardware and software?
The hardware — the Retrofit Module, DESU, RTU and RST Reset Unit — reads meters in the field and carries their data back to operations over cellular or LAN. The software — the UDR App — lets a field operator read meters over the optical port on a mobile device and publish the readings to billing systems.
Do I have to replace my meters to adopt automated reading?
Not necessarily. The Retrofit Module is designed to read meters already in the field, and the UDR App reads existing single-phase and three-phase meters over the optical port — so automated or mobile reading can often be added without replacing the meter.
How do I choose the right AmbiPower product?
It depends on what you are trying to do: to automate reading of meters already in the field, look at the Retrofit Module or the UDR App; to bring field data back to SCADA, look at the RTU and DESU; to monitor and remotely reset rack and RTU equipment, look at the RST Reset Unit. Tell us your metering environment and we will point you to a starting point.
Do AmbiPower products require replacing existing meters?
Usually not. Most products are designed to build on the meters a utility already has — the Retrofit Module reads meters in the field and the UDR App reads them over the optical port — so automated or mobile reading can often be added without a full meter replacement.
