Instrumenting the grid for visibility
The problem
Distribution networks are harder to run without visibility into what is happening on feeders and at substations. Instrumenting the network — so field equipment can report status and measurements back to operations — is the basis for a smarter grid.
What is involved
AmbiPower provides field devices that bring data back to the control room: the RTU connects field devices to SCADA, DESU concentrates and forwards field data, and the RST Device monitors and remotely resets rack and RTU equipment.
How it comes together
- Field devices (RTU, DESU) collect status and measurements on site.
- Data is forwarded to SCADA over LAN or cellular.
- The RST Device helps keep the monitoring equipment itself running.
What it can achieve
- More visibility of field equipment in the control room
- A path to bring distributed sites into SCADA
- Fewer site visits to recover monitoring equipment
These are field devices and system components. Broader outcomes such as loss reduction or predictive operation depend on the wider system a utility builds around them.
Intended for: Utility grid-modernisation, SCADA and operations teams
