Meters as connected devices
Automatic meter reading treats meters as connected devices that report their data to a central system rather than being read by hand. This is a form of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication: equipment in the field exchanging data with software without a person in the loop.
The layers involved
A typical arrangement has three layers: the meters and field devices that produce data; the communication that carries it; and the head-end or cloud system that stores and uses it. Each layer can be built in different ways depending on the deployment.
Why it matters
