Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)

A modular, scalable controller that connects digital and analog field devices back to the SCADA system and forwards their data to the SCADA backend over a LAN or a cellular connection.

Where it fits

The RTU is installed in the field or at a substation. It interfaces with local devices and relays their status and measurements to the control room’s SCADA system.

What it does

  • Interfaces with digital and analog field devices
  • Modular, scalable input/output
  • Backhaul to SCADA over LAN or cellular

How it works

  1. Connects to digital and analog field devices.
  2. Collects their status and measurements.
  3. Forwards the data to the SCADA backend over LAN or cellular.
  4. Scales through modular input/output as the site requires.

Typical use cases

  • Remote monitoring and control of feeders and substations
  • Telemetry backhaul to a control room
  • Extending SCADA visibility to distributed sites
