What Is a Smart Meter Retrofit Module?

A retrofit module is a device that adds automatic reading and communication to a meter that is already installed. Instead of replacing the meter, a utility fits the module to it, so the existing meter can be read remotely.

Why “retrofit”?

Replacing every meter in a network is a large undertaking. A retrofit approach lets a utility keep the meters it already has and add the communication part separately. That can make automatic reading easier to adopt in stages.

What a retrofit module does

In general terms, a retrofit module reads the meter and sends the readings to the utility’s systems over a communication link. Some modules also process data on the device before sending it, and can raise alerts for certain events. The exact capabilities depend on the specific module.

The AmbiPower Retrofit Module

AmbiPower’s Retrofit Module is a cellular automatic meter reader: it reads a water, gas or energy meter and forwards the readings to the utility’s Head End System over a mobile network. You can read more on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a retrofit module replace my meter?
No. A retrofit module is added to an existing meter so it can be read automatically, rather than replacing the meter.
